The Draft Vulcan is a custon built road bike. Depending on your chosen set up it can be used for
general riding, touring and racing. This bike is popular amongst racers who favour the very laid back aero position that has become synomymous with racers over the last few years. The version I rode to test was set up with a fairly upright position as the area where I do my cycling is hilly and a more upright position allows easier cranking up hill, especially for a mid level para.
Build quality is
generally excellent as is the standard of equipment fitted.
Being custom built adjustabilty is limited as crank position is fixed. The backrest can be adjusted for angle and reach. This type of bike is probably more suited to experienced riders who have a good idea of what they need. During the build process bracket position, width and reach can be optimised as can the seating position to gain the maximum advantage possible.
Gear changing and braking. This is facilitated by a T handle mounted brake and shifter levers allowing gear changing on the fly. There is a second caliper brake mounted under the seat. Chainring gear changing is done by an adapted Shimano Deore front mech, the springs have been removed and a lever attached to facilitate.
The Draft is very low profile and quick to get up to speed thanks to its light weight. Seating is comfortable even on rough roads, its turns well and has a relatively small turning circle. Criticisms, the crank axle assembly is based on an Ahead headset and I don't think these bearings are tough enough in the long term. Also the frame isn't heat treated so is prone to cracking.
