NEWS UPDATE

29-12-11 Handcycling UK is now under the chairmanship of Geoff Marshall and is undergoing a much overdue overhaul. A new website is now online with plenty of information included. I would like to wish Geoff and his committee all the best in their endeavours to push the sport forward once again.

14-9-11 Two race events for you to consider. The Aviemore 10k and the Jedburgh 10k, see our events page for details.

I know about the Aviemore 10km event. It is part of the Aviemore Halfmarathon event. The 10k course is super fast being slightly downhill all the way, so if you are looking for a 6mile blast this may be for you.

10-9-11 GB BRONZE DOUBLE. Karen Darke repeated her fine TT performance to grab another bronze at the Para Worlds this time in the WH-2 road race. Ursula Schwaller winning to gain both rianbow jersies in the WH-2 division. Rachel Morris also claimed a bronze in the WH-2 road race with Monica Bascio winning.

In the mens events there were wins for Ernst van Dyck (RSA), Jean Marc Berset (SWI) Mark Rohan (IRL)

08-9-11 BRONZE FOR GB. Karen Darke finished in 3rd place to Swiss rival Ursula Schwaller, this was her first World Championship medal in the WH-2 division TT. This improved on her 2010 fourth place proving Karen has made a steady improvement in her performances and on line for London 2012. Karen will be on the road again in Saturday's Road race will be over 46km.

Rachel Morris on the other hand will be disappointed with her 4 th place in the WH-3 TT finishing over 3 minutes down on Monica Bascio (USA).

16-8-11 The British team for the UCI world championships in Roskilde, DEN has been announced. In the handcycling divisions, defending World champion Rachel Morris (WH3) will be joined by Karen Darke (WH2), good performances in the Worlds will have a major bearing on selection for London 2012. Sadly there will no GB men at the worlds as we don't have any high enough ranked athletes.

In a bid to raise funds and awareness for SIS’s exciting new project, Clober Farm, Project Co-ordinator Shaun Dargan and Kenny Herriot, Spinal Injuries Scotland member and one of the world’s leading wheelchair athletes have been challenged to a 9 day cycle event, touring the length of Scotland.  Whilst on this journey Shaun and Kenny will be stopping in at various sites to let people know why they are doing the challenge and why a place like Clober Farm is so very important to those with a Spinal Cord Injury.

HANDBIKE DEMO DAY & BIKE RUN

SATURDAY 14th MAY, Victoria Park, Aberfeldy.

BIKE DEMO's available from 10am - 12.30pm

BIKE RUN 1pm-3pm (Your own handbike is required for this).

We are delighted to be attending this event once again, it all happens at Victoria Pk in Abefeldy at the Perthshire Cycling festival which is held in conjunction with L'Tape Caledonia cyclesportif which takes place on the 11th. In addition to cycling related stands and displays including major bike outlets and demo teams Hanfdbike Scotland, Albion Mobility and Quest88 will be demonstrating a variety of handcycing and other adapted bicycles. It is a great chance to come and try out various handbikes and ask questions from experienced handcyclists. The demo session will be held between 10am and 12.30pm then there will a gentle group run down the valley to Grandtully and back at 1pm. We would be delighted to see you there so come along and if you know of anyone who might be interested in handbiking please pass the word.

The UK round of the European Handbike Circuit at Fowlemead, scheduled for 13/14 August ,has been cancelled. The failure to attract a sponsor has been cited as the reason for its demise. It is sad that with the Paralympics just around the corner that a competition of this stature has succumbed to the current recession.

The 2011 race season got under way on the sunny island of Lanzarote with a two day event held in the resort of Playa Blanca. Karen Darke got her year of to aflying start with wins in both the time trial and the circuit race.

Germany's Vico Marklein tok victory in the mens events. Rob Wickham and Marc Poolman from the UK also took part. Full results and pics are available at http://www.handbikesport.de

Highland Perthshire Cycling Festival. A date for your diary 14th May. We are delighted to announce that we will once again be holding a come and try day at the above event. There will be an opportunity for those wishing to try out a handcyle or two from 10am till 12 followed by a road run at 1pm. This event is the ideal opportunity for those wishing to try the sport , get the chance to ride a handcycle and meet some experienced handcyclists who can answer any questions you have. The event will be held at Victoria Park in Aberfeldy. Full details will appear here in a few weeks time. Please spread the word.
